Lady Liberty

After nearly 10 years, Lady Liberty returned to the University of Wisconsin–Madison Student Union and neighboring Lake Mendota. The true-to-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty was first witnessed on ice-covered Lake Mendota in February 1979 as a prank by students running for office who campaigned on the promise of bringing the statue to campus. The new Lady Liberty, of durable polyester fabric, completely inflatable, and easily stored, came to life during the student union’s annual winter carnival in February.
