The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF and ACUI Campus Challenge:
To raise funds toward its mission of saving children’s lives worldwide, UNICEF partnered with ACUI and The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF for a fundraising challenge on campuses starting in 2008. After a successful first year donating over $80,000, we are back for a second challenge running from Aug. 1, 2009 to April 1, 2010.
The “Help Us Save Some Lives” Campus Challenge has been issued to college students encouraging them to raise awareness and funds for the UNICEF cause. In September, UNICEF announced that the number of children who die every day from preventable causes reached 24,000, over a one thousand decrease during the past three years. This happens because they lack simple things like access to clean drinking water, basic childhood medical attention, or mosquito bed nets to prevent malaria.
UNICEF’s goal is simple: The number of children who die from preventable causes should be zero.

Incentives for 2009–10 Participating Campuses:
For the upcoming year, the Grand Prize for the top team is two tickets to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s annual meeting! The trip will include round-trip airfare, hotel, and attendance to this extraordinary event for one faculty/staff advisor and one student. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s annual meeting features moving testimonials from our partners and fascinating firsthand reports from UNICEF staff—packed with the emotional power of a stirring ceremony. The event is not open to the public.
The second place campus will receive a $1,500 voucher for ACUI programs and services. This voucher may be used for a number of ACUI programs and services such as institutional membership fees, online learning programs, registration for ACUI’s annual conference, student programs, and so on.
The third place campus will receive a scholarship for one student to attend ACUI’s Institute for Leadership Education and Development (I-LEAD®), the premier college student leadership program that will take place July 18–23, 2010.
About "Help Us Save Some Lives!"
With the lyrics "Now I'm asking all of you, help us save some lives," George Harrison turned music into a political and social force. In 1971, Harrison staged two concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden that brought together a star-studded cast of musicians to alert the world to the plight of the Bangladeshi people, whose country was ravaged by floods, famine, and civil war, which forced 10 million people—mostly women and children—to flee their homes.
The Concert for Bangladesh was one of the most ambitious humanitarian efforts in music history. It produced an extraordinary contribution for UNICEF, eventually exceeding $15 million and truly showed the power of just one individual to make a difference.
