Hi all, I am wondering how many schools are using cell phone texting as a way to communicate with students about campus events and activities? I know there are emergency text solutions that schools are looking into, but how many are using it for other than emergencies? If you are using texting, how are your students reacting to the service, are they signing up? Any insight would be appreciated, I know there are a few companies out there providing this, I am just wondering what the level of interest is from the college's side. Thanks in advance for your answers. Deb Deb Hoefer Mesa State College dhoefer@mesastate.edu

It seems to become a new way to communicate about events. I see student programmers text everyone they know about events. I am interested in finding out what responses you receive from schools that does that. Thanks Carole Desgroppes California State University, Dominguez Hills cdesgroppes@csudh.edu

Deb, We are using Mobile Campus at Texas State. While it is only in its second year, we have had quite a few students sign up for the service. The students are told that they will be charged according to their mobile service plan per text message received, but that they should no more than X messages per week or month. Our office has used it for large events, occasionally, such as a reminder about some Welcome Week events this fall. The campus is also using this service as a way to send emergency messages to students, faculty and staff. If you'd like some contact information, I'd be happy to connect you with the right individuals. Good luck! Michelle Michelle M. Lopez Texas State University-San Marcos ml32@txstate.edu
