At Clemson University we are seeing a definite decline in the number of students attending weekly movies sponsored by our campus programming board. Are other schools also experiencing this? If so, what are your program boards in response to this trend? Mandy Hays Director of Student Activities and Programs Clemson University

At University of Washington in Seattle, we too are seeing a decline in attnedance. Potential Factors: - downloading - better access to dvd quality surround sound home theater experience in on campus housing and at home. - dvd's being released earlier - decline n Hollywood's attendence numbers overall & release of more "bad" movies. What we are doing (first year trying this): - enhancing the "experience" of going to the movies: more Outdoor movies, showing blockbusters "meant to be seen on a big screen". - focus on blockbuster titles whenever possible. - cult movies - collaboration with "film interest" clubs & tie ins to special interest. i.e Show "Crash" and have a student org host a post screeing race debate... - cutting back on number of films shown (quality v. quantity) Bottom line: Today's theater experience just isn't the same. Now an average student can watch on TV shows and Movies his/her laptop, ipod or HD TV with surround sound whenever they wish. Hope this helps.

At Florida State University we are seeing increases in our film program. I tend to attribute this to our state-of-the-art movie theatre (even better that commercial movie houses). This past week we had huge numbers at the Pirates of the Carribean movie, where we had a Pirate Band at intermission. Students dressed up like pirates, similar to the Rocky Horror shows of the past.
