Anyone use a bulk SMS service/carrier to send out texts to students on their campuses? I am investigating using such a service (eZTexting, club texting, tell my cell, etc.) and wonder about any user experiences.

Someone from Twitter said "Our students have turned to wiggio. Good for reminders and mass messages."  Can't say I know much about that one.  I'm doing some research for you.

Thanks for the post about Wiggio! I just checked it out and think it will be great for communicating with my student employees and committees.

One quick note about Wiggio: I think it's a really cool tool for meeting scheduling, file-sharing, etc., but I would perhaps shy away from text messaging. Their privacy policy is not necessarily air-tight, and they mention that they will share your information for "special offers and advertisements". Whether or not that includes cell numbers, I'm uncertain, but would certainly be wary. Additionally, they seem to have an indefinite use-type contract, in which the information shared on Wiggio remains with them. Just be cautious!!

While this idea won't work for campus-wide communications, it works well for staff, boards, etc. where you know the individuals to add or where you give people the option to sign up.

You need to know the user's name, phone number, and cell phone provider.

What we did for our union was to create our own internal text message alert system for building emergencies where our campus wide text message alert system would normally not apply.

We set up a listserv where the e-mail address is the text message e-mail address.  For example, if a person has US Cellular as their provider, their text message e-mail address would be number@email.uscc.net

Let me know if you have questions about our setup or if the above didn't make any sense.
