We have been experiencing a trend on campus that local businesses (specifically apartment complexes) are creating student organizations so they are afforded the benefits of student organizations, such as marketing on campus and renting space on campus. How do other campuses work with these organizations?  Do you allow them to be organizations?  What is your rationale?   How do you distinguish between businesses and non-profit groups such as Student for Make-A-Wish, or Students for TOMS?   Any information would be helpful!  Thank you.

Hi Karla-

We have a process all groups go through if they want to become chartered as a registered student organization on campus. There is an application they must fill out, they must have 10 students interested in the group and have a full-time faculty advisor. In the past, when complexes for apartments have called our office indicating that they wish to become registered, once we go over the process with them, they never call back to continue.

Do your groups have to have an advisor? It would be hard to find an advisor for an apartment complex, I would think but that is kinda how we get them. Between that and having students join the "group". All groups must have a mission statement that directly impacts student involvement/retention/or development on campus. It would be hard for the complex to fit that description based on our standards.

If I can offer any more help, please email me emily.holmes@usm.edu.
