How common is it for beer and wine to be served on institutions of higher education? Does anybody know of a report or website that can surface this information? I am collecting data related to 20,000 + students large universities. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

We have a Pub on campus in the Student Union that serves beer, wine, snacks, and alcohol free beverages.  Everyone must be at least 21 to enter the Pub.  We have one full time professional staff member that is the manager and the rest of the staff are students.  It is run by the Union, not food service.  We do allow alcohol at events such as conference receptions, catered events, etc.  Student clubs are not allowed to have alcohol.  Any event wanting alcohol must have an alcohol waiver (approved either by the Chancellor, or VC of Student Services, depending on the group, or their designee.  Any time there is alcohol served there must be an area roped off where only those that are 21 and older must remain with alcohol.

Hope this helps!

We too have a pub/dining/performance area within the building that serves beer and wine to over 21.  We are a smaller campus than your 20,000 mark with approx. 14,000 undergrad and grad.  The dining area does not do lots in the way of beer and wine sales but it has been offered since we opened the building and has not been an issue.  In keeping with their local menu/farm to table mission, all the beer and wine are locally sourced products from VT or regionally.

I haven't updated it in a while, but from http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~beckwith/CampusPubs.htm you can access a pdf document of Student Unions with Pubs.

Hope it helps,

Boyd
