Q. What is your primary responsibility?
A. In California, we are set up as 501(c)3 organization, so in addition to overseeing the traditional facilities and programs of a college union, I am responsible for all of the legal, financial, corporate governance, human resources, campus relationships, and risk management associated with the organization. I report to a student-majority board of directors.
Q. What would your staff, colleagues, or students say about you?
A That I am supportive. I let them try new things, and whether they succeed or not, help them realize the valuable lessons learned for the next time.
Q. What’s one innovation or project of which you’re proud to have helped implement?
A. Being a key player in all phases of the renovation and expansion of the union here—from identifying the need for growth and establishing student support for the fee increase to working with students in the planning, design, furniture selection, and operations of a facility that has transformed our campus.
Q. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned while working in the profession?
A. That you’re never too old to learn new things, and that if you don’t challenge yourself, you’ll never be your best.
Q. What is one phrase to live by or bit of advice you might have for future generations of union professionals?
A. Get involved in your profession and professional organizations. You’ll be surprised how good it feels to be a part of the community, to give back, and how much you gain from the involvement. You get back more than you give!
Q. Is there anything else you would like ACUI members to know about you?
A. I’m a closet “The Young & the Restless” fan!
