With the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment taking steps towards achieving climate neutrality, the higher education community is staged to play an active role in affecting change toward a more sustainable future. Students, staff, and faculty alike have the power to implement new initiatives on their campus.
Five years ago, the New Jersey Institute of Technology installed a green roof on its new campus center, which replaced the usual roof material with vegetation and solar panels. Acting as a terrace, the greenroof provides a quiet space for students while also saving money, reducing energy consumption, and serving as a visual aid of the union’s dedication to sustainability. Donna Minnich Spuhler, director of the campus center and student activities, presents this session on the benefits of the green roof to the building.
