About the 45-year Long Program
The ACUI Collegiate Clay Target
Championships program provides a quality experience for students that
teaches them fair play, concentration, logic skills, and enhances
interpersonal relationships. This furthers ACUI's goal of creating
meaningful communities. For more than 45 years, ACUI has partnered with
the host facility, sponsors, and schools from across the United States
for this event. This is the only collegiate event featuring all six
events: International Skeet and Trap, American Skeet and Trap,
Five-Stand, and Sporting Clays.
Registration is based on a first-come,
first-serve basis and has fees associated with each event. All students
are required to prove they meet eligibility
requirements by submitting a form approved by the school registrar and
submit a signed code of conduct. These forms are provided as part of
Schools represented in the championships
vary from one to 60 students. One student can proudly display their
school banner at the championships even if the school does not have a
recognized club or team. Coming to the shoot gives students tools to
work on developing a team at their home campus, opens doors to the
shooting industry for them, and provides leadership opportunities.
To get an idea of the event in 2011, please view this video. For more than 20 years, ACUI events have occurred at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, a full-service facility located 30 minutes from the airport and near shopping, restaurants, and hotels.
The 2012 program featured 535 students
representing 57 schools from across the United States. This is double
the number of students who participated three years ago. The majority of
the participants shoot three or more events, and those who shoot in all
six disciplines will then qualify for the High Overall Awards. Nearly
90 percent of students participated in American Trap, the tournament’s
top event. The biggest year-on-year growth was the 24 percent jump in
the number of registered events by these students. This growth prompted the development of the CTC Shotgun Bowl Series and with the support of benefactor MidwayUSA, six conference championships were scheduled across the country.
Media coverage in the past has been provided by ESPN-U, ESPN2, NRA-Cam & Company, the web, and Sirius, as well as in the Shooting Sports USA magazine and NRAblog.com. The National Shooting Sports Foundation's website has both stories and videos. We've even gone viral with video on YouTube and a group on Facebook.
